Public Benefits

There are a wide variety of programs that offer financial assistance to those that qualify. Not all programs use assets to determine eligibility.

MassHealth is another program which helps pay for all or part of the expense of health coverage. An application must be submitted to determine eligibility.

State Programs to Help Pay Costs

Prescription Advantage

​Prescription Advantage is a state-sponsored prescription drug insurance plan that is available to Massachusetts residents age 65 and older, as well as younger individuals with disabilities who meet income and employment guidelines. For people on Medicare, Prescription Advantage helps pay Part D Prescription Drug Plan costs. For people not on Medicare, the program offers primary prescription drug coverage with an out-of-pocket spending limit. Prescription Advantage is a Massachusetts state program that helps pay for prescription drugs for individuals who fall within certain income guidelines.

For the majority of people, this is a free program.

With this program assets are not counted to determine eligibility.

Veterans Benefits

Under Chapter 115 of Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. ch. 115), the Commonwealth provides benefits for veterans, veterans spouses and dependents of veterans. 

Each municipality has a Veterans Service Officer who will screen and assist veterans and their families to apply for benefits. 

NOTE: The Veteran Service Officer in every community MUST take an application when requested and provide written determination of a person's eligibility.
